Through studying English, we aim to foster a love of Literature and language, opening doors to worlds beyond our own.
The English department aim to support pupils as they develop a love of literature and the English language. Through the study of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, pupils can become confident in their analytical skills when approaching texts. We aim to develop high standards of literacy and therefore a key focus is inspiring young people to develop a strong command of the written and spoken word.
We focus on the following key areas
Inference. We build a strong foundation on the skill of inference so that pupils can confidently explore and discuss texts.
Analysis. Exploring the writer’s craft is a key skill to enable pupils to fully understand and grapple with the texts that we study. Developing the ability to appreciate and explore vocabulary and techniques used by writers is central to the study of English.
Enjoyment and fluency of reading. Promoting reading for enjoyment as well to develop pupils’ academic studies is a primary aim of our curriculum. Pupils have the opportunity to read a wide range of full novels throughout each year of their study of English.
Writing for a range of purposes and audiences. Building pupils’ ability to use the written word for a variety of different purposes is a key skill of the English curriculum. Being able to articulate the written word fluently and sophisticatedly is a skill that we pride ourselves on fostering throughout the English curriculum.
Spoken Language. Developing the ability to speak confidently and fluently in a range of formal and informal contexts enables pupils to be able to express their ideas and engage in discussions.
