The opportunity to build healthy, happy children, ready to take on the challenges of life today and in the future.

PSHE Curriculum Intent

To provide pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to be a productive and active member of their communities. The PSHE curriculum is designed to help prepare the pupils for life after school and how to thrive in the community. PSHE provides a safe space for the pupils to discuss their thoughts and feelings on a wide range of topics and promotes the ideas of diversity, inclusion, and respect for others. At the same time, we encourage pupils to develop their own skills and become independent workers who are resilient and ambitious.

The PSHE curriculum is broken into 5 key units within each year group. These units are built upon as pupils move through the school allowing them to embed key knowledge and skills and to expand and develop their ideas as they grow and develop as an individual.

Employability.  We consider the skills pupils need to be successful in the workplace. In year 7 this includes learning basic ICT skills which can help them in any workplace of the future. This is developed through years 8 and 9 when pupils start to examine the different options available to them after they leave The Marvell College and the skills they need to move into their chosen career pathways. In year 10 and 11 the lessons focus on supporting the pupils with applications for college and apprenticeships.

Health and Wellbeing.  Lessons examining both our physical health and mental wellbeing are taught to all year groups. This ranges from looking at diet and how to make healthy meals on a budget to looking after our emotional health. In years 10 and 11 we talk to pupils about how to manage their work life balance and to deal with the stress of exams in a healthy way.

Relationships.  The new RSE framework forms the backbone of the unit with the importance of relationships and how we manage them/ deal with conflict/ keep ourselves safe will be a constant thread through all of the units taught at both KS3 and KS4. The topics chosen in each unit are closely linked to the RSE and PSHE national frameworks. Any deviations from this or additions are due to needs the school has identified as relevant to the pupils in this community.

Community.  Lessons look at the communities our pupils are part of and how we can be a proactive and successful member of these communities. Topics range from the impact of poor behaviour on society to politics and voting and the importance of caring for our environment. Pupils’ discussion skills are a real focus in these lessons encouraging our pupils to have ideas and debate their opinions on a variety of different topics.

Me, Myself and I.  This unit focuses on encouraging our pupils to embrace their own individuality and to consider what makes them unique. We look at how to be resilient and overcome difficulties, how to look after ourselves in terms of hygiene, supporting others through difficult times like bereavement and how to cope with the changes our body experiences during puberty. In year 7 we also teach all pupils some basic first aid including bandaging an injury and CPR.
